An exercise from a typography and lettering class while studying at Designskolen Kolding in Denmark which aimed to communicate the basic foundations of building type/characters. Heavily influenced by Dolly, this is a conversation I had with Bas Jacobs while working on the exercise:

Dear Alan, thanks for the mail, but don't worry. Type design is a long process, and to create something very personal just takes time. One can't expect to spend one week on a typeface and then have the most personal, unique type you can imagine. So instead of giving up, I would say 'go go go', and make the most extreme thing you can make of it. Try many many different directions, all different, the next one more extreme than the one before, and then choose for the most outspoken one, the most personal one. For sure that will be much different than the point where you are now.
Hope this helps.
Good luck,
Bas
